If you can't foster, you can still help.

When You Can’t Foster, You Can Still Help

When people hear about foster care, emergency shelter, family separation, abuse, neglect and difficult situations children should never have to experience, they often want to help. But for many people, the first thought is also the biggest barrier:

“I can’t foster.”

That is OK.

Fostering is important, but it is not the only way to support children who need safety, stability and care. At Austin’s House, we see every day how many different kinds of support come together to create something meaningful for the children who come through our doors.

A safe place to sleep matters. So does a warm meal. A clean pair of shoes. A backpack. A quiet activity on a hard day. A ride to school. A birthday cake. A staff member who remembers what snack a child likes. A donor who purchases something from the wish list. A business that chooses to become a community partner.

These are the small moments that help create stability.

And they matter more than people may realize.

More Than Just Foster Care

Austin’s House provides emergency shelter and care for children who have been removed from unsafe situations or are experiencing a family crisis. Children may arrive at any hour of the day or night. Some come with very little. Many are facing uncertainty, change and emotions that are hard to put into words.

Our primary role is to provide safety, but it does not stop there.

Austin’s House also provides meals, clothing, hygiene items, school support, medical and dental coordination, emotional support, supervision, activities, transportation, routine and a home-like environment where children can begin to feel steady again.

That is what we mean when we say Austin’s House is More Than Just Foster Care.

It means making sure a child has what they need today while the adults and agencies involved in their case work toward what comes next. It means helping children stay connected to school, activities and familiar routines when possible. It means making sure children are cared for 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

And it means the community has a role to play.

You Can Help Meet Everyday Needs

Sometimes support looks very practical.

Children need clothing, shoes, pajamas, toiletries, school supplies, backpacks, snacks, books, games, art supplies and seasonal items. During the summer, that may also include outdoor activities, sunscreen, water bottles, craft supplies and simple items that help kids enjoy safe, age-appropriate fun.

For a child in crisis, these items are not small.

A new toothbrush can help restore dignity. A clean outfit can help a child feel more comfortable going to school. A coloring book or board game can offer a calm moment in the middle of a hard day. A donated snack can be part of a routine that helps life feel a little more normal.

One of the easiest ways to help is to purchase items from Austin’s House Amazon Wishlist. These items go directly toward daily care and help staff meet needs as they come up.

You Can Make a Financial Gift

Financial donations help Austin’s House continue providing care around the clock.

Because Austin’s House operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the need for trained staff, meals, transportation, supplies and daily care is constant. Donations help bridge the gap between what is covered through state reimbursement and what it actually costs to care for each child.

A gift does not have to be large to matter.

Monthly donations help create steady support Austin’s House can count on. One-time gifts help meet immediate needs.

Every donation helps create safety, comfort and care for children during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

You Can Become a Community Partner or Corporate Sponsor

Businesses, organizations, families and individuals can also support Austin’s House through the Community Partnership Program.

Community partners help provide year-round support for the services and resources children need while they are staying at Austin’s House. This support helps sustain daily care and strengthens the community surrounding children in crisis.

Corporate sponsors play an especially important role in helping Austin’s House fulfill its mission. Through corporate sponsorship, businesses and organizations can demonstrate their commitment to children and families across rural Nevada while receiving recognition opportunities throughout the year. These may include website recognition, social media recognition, community partner spotlights, event recognition opportunities, volunteer engagement opportunities and Proud Supporter resources.

Businesses that become corporate sponsors also help raise awareness. When a local business proudly shares its support for Austin’s House, it helps more people understand who we are, what we do and why this work matters.

Individual sponsors are also part of this work. Whether someone gives as a family, an individual supporter, a business or an organization, each partnership helps ensure Austin’s House remains a safe, welcoming place where children can experience comfort, stability and hope.

Community support has always been part of the Austin’s House story. The shelter exists because people came together to create a safe place for children. That same spirit continues today through donors, sponsors, volunteers, staff, board members and community partners who believe every child deserves a safe place to land.

You Can Volunteer and Show Up in the Community

Not every volunteer opportunity happens inside the shelter, and not every act of support requires direct care.

Austin’s House participates in community events, awareness campaigns, donation drives and other outreach opportunities throughout the year. Volunteers and community supporters help make these efforts possible.

Helping at an event, sharing information with a friend, supporting a donation drive or connecting Austin’s House with a business or organization that may want to get involved are all meaningful ways to help.

Every conversation matters.

The more people understand Austin’s House, the easier it becomes to build the support network children need.

You Can Help Spread Awareness

Awareness may sound simple, but it is powerful.

Many people still do not know Austin’s House exists or understand the role emergency shelter plays for children in rural Nevada. Some people think child welfare support only means becoming a foster parent. Others may not realize that children in crisis need immediate, practical care while longer-term plans are being made.

You can help by following Austin’s House on social media (Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn), sharing posts, inviting others to learn more, talking about the organization with friends and family, and helping people understand that there are many ways to support children.

When more people know, more people can help.

Small Moments Create Big Stability

At Austin’s House, care often happens in ordinary moments.

A meal at the table. Clean clothes folded and ready. A backpack packed for school. A quiet craft. A familiar routine. A ride to an appointment. A safe room. A kind voice. A community that keeps showing up.

These moments may seem small from the outside, but for children experiencing crisis, they can be part of rebuilding trust, comfort and stability.

You may not be able to foster.

But you can still help provide safety.

You can help provide comfort.

You can help provide the everyday items children need.

You can help make sure Austin’s House remains ready, day and night, for the next child who needs a safe place to land.
