Nevada is a big state. Outside of Reno and Las Vegas, miles of open road stretch between small towns and rural communities. For children living in those places, resources can be scarce, and when a crisis happens there are very few options for immediate care.
Austin’s House is the only emergency shelter serving children from all of Nevada’s rural counties. While Washoe and Clark counties have their own shelters, every other county turns to us when a child needs a safe place to stay. Judges, caseworkers, and law enforcement officers know that when they call, Austin’s House will be here.
That can mean a child is brought to us in the middle of the night after being removed from a dangerous situation. It can mean siblings arriving together so they do not have to be separated. For children placed with us from Douglas County, Carson City, and parts of Lyon County, it can also mean the chance to keep attending their same school while they stay at Austin’s House. For children coming from farther away, we work closely with caseworkers and schools to make sure their education is supported during their time here.
Without Austin’s House, children from Nevada’s rural counties would have even fewer options for safe placement. For some, that may still mean being away from their schools and friends. What Austin’s House provides is a safe, stable environment where every child has caring adults by their side and the support they need to begin healing.
