Safety Changes Everything and Doesn’t Have an Expiration Date

Why stability matters for children in crisis

How safety changes everything: When a child arrives at Austin’s House, their world may have changed in a matter of hours.

They may have left their home, belongings, routines, and the people they know behind. They might not know what will happen next or how long they’ll be away. In that moment, feeling safe is what matters most.

At Austin’s House, it starts with a welcoming place to sleep, clean clothes, a warm meal, and caring adults ready to help. But safety isn’t just for the first night. Some children need stability for weeks, months, or longer, because safety has no expiration date.

When a Temporary Stay Becomes a Longer Journey

Austin’s House is the only children’s emergency shelter serving rural Nevada counties. We provide care around the clock for children from birth to age 18 who have been removed from unsafe homes due to abuse, neglect, or family crisis.

The shelter provides immediate safety while child welfare professionals work toward an appropriate long-term placement.

Sometimes, the next step comes quickly. A child might stay just a few days before moving to a foster home or another safe place. Other times, finding the right placement takes much longer.

Every child’s situation is unique. Some have siblings who need to stay together. Others have medical, emotional, or developmental needs that require special care. Older children and teens face extra challenges when there aren’t enough foster homes. In Nevada, that shortage is a real problem.

The Challenge of Finding a Safe Place to Call Home

According to the Nevada Division of Child and Family Services’ 2025 Foster/Adoptive Parent Recruitment and Retention Plan, rural Nevada had 126 licensed foster-care beds, compared with an estimated need for 389. That represented a shortage of 263 beds.

These numbers show how hard it is for children who need safe homes, and why safety changes everything for these kids.

When a placement isn’t available nearby, a child may face another big change. Being placed farther away can mean leaving behind familiar schools, friends, siblings, relatives, and community ties.

For children who have already experienced the trauma of leaving home, consistency matters.

Austin’s House offers that stability while child welfare professionals look for the right next step. The goal isn’t just to find a place for a child to go. It’s to find a placement that meets their needs and gives them long-term stability. Until then, they still need care.

Every Day of Care Counts

In 2025, Austin’s House gave 2,180 days of care to children in crisis. Thirty-three children stayed an average of 66 nights. That’s 2,180 days of making meals, giving rides, helping kids get ready for school, maintaining routines, and ensuring caring adults are always there.

It’s also 2,180 days of helping children feel a bit more normal during a very uncertain time.

A longer stay is more than just extra nights in a bed. It means birthdays, school days, homework, doctor visits, holidays, and all the daily moments of growing up. For kids at Austin’s House, these moments keep happening, no matter how long it takes to find their next home.

The number of children we serve is one part of the story. The number of days of care tells another. When children stay longer, we may help fewer kids in a year, but we still give a lot of daily care and support.

We don’t measure the need for safety just by how many children come through our doors. It’s also about the care they get while they’re here.

More Than a Safe Place to Sleep

Austin’s House offers more than just emergency shelter. Children need healthy meals, the right clothes, rides to school and appointments, chances to play and learn, and adults they can count on.

They need routines that make their days feel more predictable, even when they don’t know what the future holds.

Most of all, they need to know someone is there for them.

Whether a child stays for three days or three months, our commitment is the same: to provide a safe place where their needs are met and they can start to feel secure again. This takes dedicated caregivers, resources, and a community that supports our mission.

Safety Changes Everything

For a child in crisis, safety might be as simple as waking up in a familiar bed, having breakfast, or knowing someone will be there after school. These daily moments may seem small, but they can mean everything to a child whose world has changed.

At Austin’s House, every day is a new chance to give stability, compassion, and care as children find their way forward. Thanks to our community’s generosity, we can keep providing that care as long as it’s needed.

A safe today builds a brighter tomorrow.
